That grittiness is diluted somewhat with some scattered pockets of humour, i. Lists with This Book. I must be honest and admit I couldn’t get into this book. The various connections in simonn book between characters and events were confusing and somewhat contrived. It is Tomboy who lets Dennis know that his one-time partner, a straight arrow named Asif Malik, has been gunned down in a London restaurant.

This was the follow up to The Business of Dying and I was already prepared for a rather rough ride, and that’s sure what we get in the second novel with ex policeman Dennis Milne, who is for a time known as Mick Kane and later PI Mick Kane, but then Dennis Milne again All the right thriller ingredients, fast-paced, exciting and plenty of twists and turns.


Simon has obviously perfected his art over the intervening period. However it does have you doubt yourself and change your opinions many times. It makes you sympathize with the murderer and you end up f It’s a good thriller with an interesting plot.

His best friend has been brutally executed, and Milne wants to know who did it – and why.

They weren’t many in number, and they never interfered with the work I did as simn detective in London’s Metropolitan Police, so I never thought that I was doing much wrong. Milne arrives in a pre-Christmas London that is cold and hostile. Didn’t see the outcome coming either!

Although I like Simon Kernick as an author, I’ve only really liked two out of the four that I’ve read listened to so far, but I will persist with others.

I thought that he had left that part of his life behind but then it wouldn’t have made it a novel if that was the case, and I was exceptionally happy. Dennis Milne is back! The premise of the book, Milne avenging Malik’s death, was rather flimsy to me, in that he hadn’t even seen Malik in over 3 years.

This was a pretty good book if you like them to start off with alot of action.

He made it as far as the Philippines, where working under the name Marcus Kane, he has gone into the diving-supply trade with a former informant. But he is no longer a policeman; no kerhick charged with keeping the peace and upholding the law.

To this day, he is haunted by his actions. Having been conditioned by simmon audiobook narration, I’m not sure if the dialogues on paper were quite as bad as they came across here, or if Dave just portrayed them in a banal way. This is the first Simon Kernick novel I’ve read, and I was very pleased.
